Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Forest Camp
The climb begins at Londorossi Gate, where trekkers register, meet the guides, and prepare for the journey. The initial trail winds through dense rainforest, alive with colobus monkeys, colorful birds, and exotic plants. The trail is moderately steep, providing an ideal introduction to altitude and mountain trekking. After several hours, climbers reach Lemosho Forest Camp at approximately 2,600 meters. Here, you enjoy a hot meal, a warm drink, and a gentle evening walk, absorbing the sounds of the forest as your body adjusts to the altitude.
Day 2: Lemosho Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail gradually opens into heath and moorland, revealing expansive volcanic landscapes. Giant lobelias and tall heathers create a surreal environment as trekkers ascend toward the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic features. Shira 1 Camp sits at 3,500 meters, offering panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi. The longer hiking day allows for gradual acclimatization, and the evening provides an opportunity for photography and reflection while watching the sun set over the plateau.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
The trek across the Shira Plateau is mostly flat but incredibly scenic, surrounded by volcanic ridges and rocky outcrops. This moderate day allows trekkers to adjust to higher altitudes while enjoying the tranquil, open landscape. Shira 2 Camp sits slightly higher, providing views across the plateau and toward Kibo peak, enhancing the sense of adventure. Evening at camp includes a warm meal, rest, and acclimatization discussions from guides to prepare for the next day’s ascent to Lava Tower.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Today is considered an acclimatization day, featuring a trek up to Lava Tower (4,600 m), a dramatic volcanic ridge. Climbers gradually ascend, then descend to Barranco Camp, located at the base of the famous Barranco Wall. The day offers a unique combination of rocky landscapes, alpine flora, and sweeping views. Camp life includes a hot meal, sunset photography, and rest, giving trekkers time to recover and reflect on the dramatic scenery.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day starts with the Barranco Wall climb, a steep but achievable rock face that provides a sense of accomplishment early in the morning. After conquering the wall, trekkers continue through rocky moorlands and valleys, enjoying panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks. This is a shorter hiking day, intended to help climbers recover and further acclimatize for the summit push. Arriving at Karanga Camp, trekkers take in the serene high-altitude environment, preparing mentally and physically for the next day’s ascent to Barafu Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
From Karanga, the trail gradually ascends to Barafu Camp (4,600 m), the base for the summit attempt. The terrain transitions into alpine desert, with stark, rocky landscapes and sparse vegetation, emphasizing the mountain’s high-altitude environment. Afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and receiving a summit briefing, ensuring climbers understand pacing, layering, and energy conservation. Dinner is early, and campers prepare for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.
Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt begins around midnight, trekking through the alpine desert under a starry sky. Climbers ascend slowly to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Sunrise from the summit provides breathtaking panoramic views of glaciers, Kibo crater, and the surrounding plains. After celebrating the achievement, trekkers descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for rest and refreshments before continuing down to Mweka Camp, nestled in lush rainforest. This day is the pinnacle of the adventure, combining triumph, exhaustion, and awe-inspiring scenery.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha
The final day involves a gentle descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where climbers receive their Kilimanjaro Summit Certificates. The walk allows for reflection and celebration of the journey. From the gate, travelers are transferred back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of a remarkable 8-day journey through Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes and ecosystems.
